October 10, 2024As autumn arrives, vibrant colors and cooler evenings bring unique driving challenges, especially for the towing and trucking industries. Hazards like unpredictable weather, wildlife activity, and shorter daylight hours affect road safety. Pacific Towing highlights the importance of preparation for reliable service across Ontario.
With increased demand for commercial towing in fall, regular vehicle maintenance is crucial for safer driving. Whether for personal or fleet vehicles, staying vigilant helps navigate seasonal challenges effectively.
Cold Weather Affects Your Tire Traction
Decreased Grip: Colder temperatures can significantly reduce tire traction, particularly on wet or frosty roads.
Regular Checks: It’s essential to regularly inspect your tire pressure and tread to prepare for unpredictable autumn weather.
Risk of Accidents: Poor tire traction can lead to accidents, increasing the need for towing services.
Reliable Support: Pacific Towing offers quick and reliable roadside assistance, including commercial towing for heavy-duty vehicles.
Wildlife Hazards on the Road
Increased Activity: Fall brings heightened wildlife movement, especially from deer, leading to a surge in accidents.
Peak Season: November sees the highest number of deer-related collisions, making it crucial to stay alert.
Caution at Dusk and Dawn: Be extra vigilant during dawn and dusk when visibility is low, and wildlife is more active.
Emergency Support: If you experience a collision or vehicle damage due to wildlife, Pacific Towing is ready to assist with emergency towing services.
Heavy-Duty Assistance: Our fleet of heavy-duty tow trucks is equipped to handle any situation, ensuring you get back on the road safely.
Bad Weather Preparation Can Make All the Difference
Be Aware of Weather Variability: Fall can bring sudden changes in weather, including rain, fog, and frost, which can create unsafe driving conditions.
Avoid Driving in Severe Weather: Whenever possible, it’s best to stay off the road during severe weather conditions, as suggested by experts from the AAA.
Keep an Emergency Kit Ready: Equip your vehicle with a well-stocked emergency kit that includes: A phone charger, Bottled water, A flashlight with extra batteries, Warm blankets for comfort
Safety Adjustments for Fall Driving
To combat these fall driving hazards, consider the following strategies:
More Space: Maintain a 5 to 6-second gap between vehicles during poor visibility conditions to allow more time to react to road hazards.
Increased Vision: Regularly check mirrors and stay aware of your surroundings, as visibility can be compromised.
Be Cautious Around Schools: Familiarize yourself with school bus traffic laws and stay vigilant in neighborhoods during the school year.
Managing Driver Fatigue
If you find yourself feeling fatigued while driving, it’s essential to prioritize safety:
Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can help minimize fatigue.
Take a Power Nap: A short nap can provide a quick energy boost.
Move Around: Stretching and walking can increase blood flow and alertness.
Visual Inputs: Keep your eyes moving to prevent tunnel vision.
Use Caffeine Wisely: A moderate amount can help, but avoid overconsumption.
Final Thoughts
Driving is an ongoing journey, especially during the fall season, when hazards can escalate. For those in the towing industry, staying prepared for emergencies is vital. Whether you’re driving a personal vehicle or managing a fleet of tow trucks, prioritizing safety and being aware of fall driving hazards can help everyone navigate this season smoothly. October 8, 2024Safety is critical in towing operations, and daily vehicle inspections play a vital role in keeping tow trucks roadworthy. Whether you’re part of the towing industry or manage a fleet, regular inspections help ensure that vehicles are operational and prepared for the demands of the job.
Why Daily Inspections Are Important
Daily inspections, conducted either before or after a trip, can spot issues before they turn into major problems. This not only reduces the risk of breakdowns but also prevents costly repairs and helps maintain a professional reputation. A poorly maintained truck can lead to delays, safety hazards, and loss of business.
What to Include in a Tow Truck Inspection
While a standard DOT inspection covers the basics like the cab and chassis, it’s important to go beyond that to include the tow body. A thorough inspection should cover:
Tires: Check for wear, proper inflation, and alignment.
Fluids: Ensure oil, coolant, brake, and transmission fluid levels are adequate.
Lights: Verify all safety lights, including brake and turn signals, are functioning.
Brakes: Examine pads and overall brake system effectiveness.
Winches and Tow Equipment: Inspect for wear or damage.
Hydraulics: Check for leaks and smooth operation.
By covering these areas, you can identify and address issues specific to towing equipment that may not be included in a standard check.
Acting on Findings Quickly
Finding problems is only the first step; acting on them promptly is crucial. Implement a process where maintenance teams can quickly address issues like low oil levels, worn tires, faulty lights, or malfunctioning towing mechanisms. Quick repairs minimize downtime and reduce the risk of accidents.
Safety in Emergency Situations
Towing operations often happen in challenging conditions, such as during traffic incident management or in adverse weather. A malfunctioning tow truck can create additional hazards, so regular inspections and timely repairs are essential for ensuring scene safety and protecting everyone involved.
Incorporating daily inspections into your routine not only ensures compliance with safety regulations but also boosts reliability. Share these tips with your team to maintain a safe, efficient fleet and uphold high standards of service.

February 14, 2024Throughout the day, the weather will remain sunny with wind gusts reaching up to 10km/h. In fact, the temperature is expected to rise to three degrees Celsius. This rise in temperature can be attributed to the combination of the cloudy skies, wind gusts, and also it is expected to be cloudy later in the afternoon. It is important to take this into account when planning outdoor activities or commuting. Currently, visibility is clear, meaning that there are no obstructions or fog hindering the ability to see clearly. However, there is a possibility of foggy conditions later in the evening, specifically in the vicinity of Hwy 10. This means that as the day progresses and evening approaches, there is a chance that fog may develop in the area surrounding Hwy 10 near Orangeville, Georgetown and surrounding streets of Airport Road and Sider Road. Fog can reduce visibility significantly, making it difficult to see the road and other objects. This can pose a potential hazard for drivers and pedestrians in the area.

August 31, 2023OPP contacted us, having called us first, in regard to a pressing situation on Highway 401 E, near to Mississauga. A serious accident involving three transport trucks had occurred, requiring immediate assistance from a heavy tow. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) explicitly instructed us to clear the highway due to its obstruction caused by the collision. Moreover, a diesel fuel leak from the tank was reported, further compounded by the widespread spillage of transmission and engine oil across the entire stretch of the highway.
The occurrence of the accident caused a significant disruption in the flow of traffic, primarily due to the fact that it resulted in the obstruction of the middle lanes on the highway. It became apparent that taking swift and safe action was crucial in order to address the situation effectively and restore the roadway to its normal capacity. Consequently, our dedicated crews promptly mobilized and arrived at the scene with specialized recovery units to commence the process of recovering the trucks involved in the accident, while also ensuring the removal of debris and pollutants from the area. The objective was to facilitate the reopening of the highway as soon as possible.
Upon arrival at the location, our Hazmat team swiftly took action to address the occurrence of the hazardous fluids spillage, aiming to restrict and inhibit any potential further spread along the highway. To effectively achieve this, we promptly deployed speedy dry absorbent material to form containment barriers around the areas where the fluids were leaking; efficiently creating dikes that enclosed the pools of hazardous substances. Our immediate response and implementation of these containment measures were vital in containing the spill and minimizing its impact on the surrounding environment.
After the entire fuel was extracted, our HAZMAT truck was relocated at the scene to allow for the subsequent recovery units to carry out their tasks effectively. We positioned our NRC Rotator and NRC Slidder for operation. Firstly, we successfully dislodged the first truck, which had become tightly wedged under the cement truck and had caused extensive damage to its front portion. Subsequently, we had to carefully remove the obstructing truck from the path and proceeded to connect the tractor-trailer by detaching the axles. For securing the load, we utilized a combination of chains and straps.
Furthermore, to address the remaining oil and fuel, additional absorbent materials were applied across the entire affected area. These absorbents were specifically chosen for their high absorption capacity. Once the contaminated speedy dry absorbent had absorbed the oil and fuel, it was diligently gathered by sweeping and then carefully deposited into designated HAZMAT Drums for proper disposal. [...]

August 26, 2023In today’s contemporary world, companies need to be prepared for any difficult or emergency situation. Truck Rollovers are one of them. Truck rollovers occur in distinct circumstances linked to a truck’s stability during cornering or turning, influenced by factors like its center of gravity and track width. Truck rollovers are unique accidents that occur in specific circumstances related to a truck’s stability when navigating corners, curves, or making turns. The stability of a truck is influenced by factors such as its center of gravity and track width, which is the distance between its right and left wheels. A few weeks ago, a similar rollover happened where Pacific Towing And Recovery provided an immediate response to fix the pinch. The live bottom rolled over in a gravel pit which was jeopardy. Team members of Pacific Towing reached on scene at an appropriate time with the NRC Rotator and NRC 50 Ton to recover the unit. As such, it was of utmost concern to recover the truck and live bottom trailer and remove the debris and pollutants as quickly and safely as possible. Once on the scene, our Hazmat crew members immediately began dealing with the spill of hazardous fluids in order to contain them and prevent them from spreading any further down in the gravel pit. Speedy dry absorbent was spread underneath the leaking areas to create dikes around the pools of hazardous fluids. After all of the fuel was removed, our HAZMAT truck was relocated to the scene in order to allow for further recovery units to perform tasks. Our NRC rotator & and NRC Slidder were set up. Firstly, we have unloaded the live bottom as it was loaded with gravel. Then hooked up the trailer by removing the axles in order for secure recovery. Chains and Straps were used in order to secure the unit. In addition, several more absorbants were used over the entire affected area where there was still oil & and fuel. All the contaminated speedy dry absorbant was swept up & and placed into HAZMAT Drums to be disposed of.
As unfortunate incident preparedness is critical today, Pacific Towing covers you with immediate response, 24 hours a day & and 7 days a week. We cover all types of accidents, rollovers, or any urgent situation. We have fully certified and trained staff with a quick response team. [...]
